1Then came all the tribes of Israel [and] gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. 2And also in time past, even when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain [and a] ruler over my people Israel. 3Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league [or] covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. S4David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. S5In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah. S6/C4And David the king and his men and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; unto where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land: C5 And the inhabitants of Jebus spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither. S7Nevertheless David took the castle [or] strong hold of Zion: the same which is the city of David. S8/C6And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites first, and the lame and the blind that are hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief. S9/C7And so David dwelt in the castle [or] fort, and therefore they called it the city of David. C8And David built the city round about, even from Millo round about and inward. And Joab repaired the rest of the city. S10/C9And so David went on, and grew great, and waxed greater and greater: for the LORD God of hosts was with him. |
